Bulls Training Camp Update

Bulls cancel evening practice
By
John Jackson September 30, 2009 2:15 PM

Wednesday was supposed to be the last day of two-a-days for the Bulls, but coach Vinny Del Negro decided to cancel the evening session. Instead, the team had a longer morning practice.
"I thought the guys gave great effort for four straight days with double sessions," Del Negro said. "I just thought we'd have one long practice today, and we got a lot out of it."

Except for backup center Aaron Gray, who went down Tuesday with a stress fracture in his lower left leg, the Bulls made it through the four days of double sessions healthy.
"I feel bad for Aaron; he's had a productive summer," Del Negro said. "We hate to lose him and it would have been a great time for him to get some experience under his belt in the exhibition season. But you can't control the injuries and now he just has to condition himself and try to stay in the best shape he can."
Gray is expected to be sidelined six to eight weeks, so he's likely to miss the first month of the regular season.

#4 Ole Miss at South Carolina

David Lee signs 1 year deal for 8million

David Lee has agreed to a 1-year qualifying offer for $8 million plus incentives with New York, agent Mark Bartelstein tells Yahoo! Sports.

So The Duo for the Knicks are both signed on 1 year deals

Nate close to a 1yr deal with knicks

Nate Robinson and the Knicks are close to finalizing a one-year contract.
A source with knowledge of the situation Wednesday told Newsday that parameters of an agreement are in place for a one-year deal for an undisclosed amount higher than his qualifying offer of $2.9 million.
The contract has not yet been signed, according to a team spokesman, so there was no official announcement. But it is believed an agreement, which includes performance bonuses, will be officially finalized as early as Thursday.

Harpring Becomes Valuable Trade Chip? Check out this

Matt Harpring's $6.5 million salary is fully guaranteed for this season and the Jazz would see no salary cap/luxury tax relief were he unable to play, as the NBA requires a one-year waiting period following retirement in such cases.
The Jazz should be able to recover the majority of Harpring's salary from insurance if he misses at least half the season.
By keeping him on the roster, Harpring gives the Jazz a 13th player under contract as the NBA requires. He also could prove an attractive trade chip with an expiring contract.

NBA NEWS & NOTES

Raymond Felton will sign the one-year, $5.5 million qualifying offer from the Charlotte Bobcats, according to multiple sources.
The Bobcats had been discussing a long-term deal with Felton, but neither side was eager to budge from their respective positions.
“Raymond is just ready to put the focus back on basketball,” Felton’s agent, Kevin Bradbury, said. “He doesn’t want any of this to affect the team at the start of training camp. So, we’ll look forward to him having a great season, the Bobcats having a great season and we will talk more with the organization when it is appropriate.”

Courtesy of:Via SportingNews

The Wolves on Tuesday waived veteran guard Chucky Atkins, agreeing to pay him $760,000 for a $3.48 million contract that was mostly non-guaranteed.
Mark Blount and his $7.96 million expiring contract are expected to be waived in the next week.
Courtesy of:Via Star Tribune

The Heat have extended the contract of head coach Erik Spoelstra.
The move comes in the wake of news that all the team's employees in basketball operations, including president Pat Riley, accepted voluntary pay cuts earlier this year.
Spoelstra, who reportedly was given a three-year contract when he was named head coach in April 2008, did not disclose terms of the extension, but it is believed to be for one year.

And for us Bulls Fans No big Note worthy news until Friday`s Start of Media Day and Saturday`s start for Training Camp(But one minor note)

The Bulls formally announced the re-signing of third-year reserve center Aaron Gray on Tuesday. The move had been expected for months and reported as such.
Gray signed a one-year deal worth roughly $1 million.
The Bulls open training camp Friday.

Keith Bogans Will Sign With Spurs/Also Flip Murray being looked at by Bobcats

Free-agent swingman Keith Bogans will sign a one-year contract with the San Antonio Spurs, sources confirmed Monday to FanHouse.Bogans, a solid defensive player, is being looked at as an heir apparent to Bruce Bowen, who retired recently after being San Antonio's perimeter defensive stopper throughout much of the decade. The Spurs had been grooming Ime Udoka for that role, but they are electing not to bring him back as a free agent after he played two seasons with the team.Bogans, who will sign a guaranteed deal worth the minimum of $1.03 million, last season averaged 6.0 points for Milwaukee. He has a 7.5 average over six seasons.Bogans also had been looked at by the Denver Nuggets. However, the Nuggets have had a contract offer out the past few weeks on guard Flip Murray and are continuing to wait on him.Sources have told FanHouse that Murray has been offered the minimum of $1.1 million by the Nuggets. He is hoping to get the biannual exception of $1.99 million, but indications are the Nuggets, who are over the luxury-tax threshold, are unwilling to spend that much.Murray also is being looked at by Charlotte. It remains to be seen if the Bobcats might come up with an offer that could pry Murray away from Denver.

Jazz, Knicks talking according to Ric Bucher

According to Ric Bucher, the Jazz is looking to acquire David Lee by working out a sign-and-trade deal with the Knicks."The Jazz have great interest in Lee and are still looking to move Carlos Boozer," Bucher said. "There would have to be other pieces involved, but with Boozer's contract expiring, that would make sense for both sides."

Hey Fans,Veiwers I hope you enjoy my recruitment letter to DWADE; Now I`m back with little NBA News

Timberwolves signing Pavlovic
After completing a buyout with the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday, guard Sasha Pavlovic(notes) has agreed in principle on a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
Pavlovic, 25, was traded to the Suns with Ben Wallace(notes) in the Shaquille O’Neal(notes) trade in June. He played five seasons with the Cavaliers before the deal. With proceeds from the Suns buyout, Pavlovic will make $2.75 million this season.
Pavlovic’s role with the Cavaliers diminished last season. The Timberwolves’ new coach, Kurt Rambis, was a big proponent of signing Pavlovic, a source said.
The New York Knicks also expressed interest in signing Pavlovic.

By Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports

NBA NEWS &NOTES(2)

- Carlos Arroyo in negotiations with clippers and hawks(we have to see on this one, Because we heard rumors If i`m correct from this same Paper that the Bulls had signed him to a 1year deal; which was just something to gas up some teams and draw interest. Like I saided before im a fan of Carlos and i think he is a good player, i just think right now the interest is at a minimal because of what he provides. If I was a team and Arroyo was available for a Vet minimal or Mid level for 1year i`ll go after him; He`s a very good player which teams should at least take a glance.(I`m done, but you all can check my achives for my thoughts on Arroyo.)

-The San Antonio Spurs have signed guard Curtis Jerrells to a make-good contract with a partial guarantee, one source told HoopsHype.com. The signing is expected to be announced later this week.
Jerrells, a 6-foot-1 point guard, starred four years at Baylor and was named to the All-Big 12 in 2009.

MY RECRUITMENT LETTER TO DWAYNE WADE(FROM OF COARSE A BULLS FAN)

Dwyane Wade was asked on Friday if the Bulls would be his top destination in the event he left the Heat in free agency.
"If I disclose that kind of information, the articles this season aren't as exciting anymore," Wade told the Daily Herald. "Speculation is not the same. You guys ain't going to have nothing to talk about me."
Wade was then asked what would keep him in Miami.
"Well, first of all I love the organization," he added.
"I love what it stands for, from the owner Mickey Arison on down. It's a first class organization. We've had some good times in Miami. I love the weather. It's become home for me for the past six years. Hey, it's not my fault Miami drafted me at No. 5 (in 2003) and Chicago did not move up (from No. 7)."
Via Daily Herald

(MY PERSONAL LETTER OF RECRUITMENT TO DWADE FROM ME)(I WROTE THIS NOBODY COPY THIS PLEASE)(Again!!! Do not Copy this only stays on my site, nothing leaves my site with out the permission of me)
I don`t know what`s in his plans, But Dwayne sure does have a great business savy about opening up all avenues. But Just a quick Recruitment to Dwade to come back home to Chicago. First, to start off the Recruitment of DWADE, I will explain too him that we have a very young and talented team filled with great abilities. Second, I will talk to Dwayne about some of the Bulls players who will be there Long-term(just taking a guess/gut feeling), I would of Coarse start with the franchise in Derrick and I`m pretty sure I can just say his name and he will know that this guy is going to be a Beast and become elite; Then I will talk about another one of the keepers here with this franchise(as we all know my mentor/idol Joakim Noah) Joakim Noah. I will provided a great deal of info on Noah to build a stronger recruitment to get Dwade.(I KNOW A FEW MIGHT LOOK AT ME CRAZY LIKE HOW CAN HE HELP RECRUIT HIM HERE). I would tell Dwayne that Joakim is a young talented 7footer who has great potential he`s only 24(well 25 by that time) and he is a winner that embraces thewinning culture; also the most underated charteristic about Joakim is his ability to gel with teammates and his Personality can propel to be a great player in this league that can be a piece to help you win multiple titles. Also I`m pretty sure he is hereing a very strong case, which he is thinking hard about, I would then say:"HEY DWAYNE" we also have another young talent that when he is healthy he can be serious player to be reckon with, who is Luol Deng. Then DWAYNE is thinking like yeah!! I remember what i saw from a very young Luol who was the Franchise Before Derrick Got their and man this guy was the Poster Boy for the Young Bulls during that time. Lastly, I believe Dwayne Wade is real sold and is ready to come; But he just needs a little assures as of the Bench, I`ll say Dwayne we still have Captain Kirk who is a very good player to bring off the Bench; who excells at good defense, and also a hell of a second option to come off the bench and play the PG if Injury occurs or to give derrick a break also this guy can back you up as a starting 2; So Dwayne he has so much versatilty and did I mention he play some great D when he was match against Paul Pierce. Add that to the Veteran Brad Miller who provides stability for the team/Front Court; also with rookies(who will be 2nd year players Next year) James Johnson and Taj Gibson they will provide the depth for the front-Court also these two still are just enhancing their skills; and Dwayne we have veteran leadership on this team too that will get our young guys to focus on the matter at hand; Like Lindsay Hunter. So Dwayne I wrote this for you so that you will see it as if we were talking personalty. SO DWAYNE COME BACK HOME TO CHICAGO;SO THAT OUR BULLS CAN JUST BE REIGNING TITLES!!!!!! LIKE IN THE GLORY DAYS
DWAYNE YOU BELONG IN CHICAGO!!!!! SO HOPEFULLY NEXT YEAR YOU WILL BE BACK HOME FOR GOOD WEREIN YOUR #3 BULLS JERSEY
HERE`S YOUR RECRUITMENT LETTER
PLEASE READ AND CONSIDER US
LIKE ALWAYS:"IT`S BEEN A PLEASURE"

Also Dwayne hears some theme music for you that will become your superhero music:(P.S Like you know their will only be 1 Mike; You will never Be him and nobody will ever be on his level ever. Mike Represents the Bulls he is the bulls but he left a legacy here; which we need to build from and you are the Superstar pair up with a elite talented Point Guard in Derrick that can take us to winning titles level; Just Picture 2 Chicago Superstars carrying the touch and lifting the City of Chicago up and picking the bulls up out of average(since Jordan Left)So lets get It!!!!!!) Here`s the theme song that will have you dreaming of that day:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NU9ZyyUWojA

Some Sad News I just learn about

The Bobcats Part Owner was killed in plane accident early this morning. R.I.P William Beck Jr. age49

Here`s the story:
Skipper Beck, part owner of the Bobcats, was killed in a Rock Hill plane crash early Friday.
William “Skipper” Beck Jr., 49, was piloting the Cirrus SR-22 that crashed just after takeoff from the Rock Hill/York County Airport at about 7:15 a.m. Witnesses said the plane took off and the pilot must have had trouble because he was turning back toward the airport when the plane suddenly went down.

Eventhough, I`m not a Bobcats fan this is still sad news and for a event to occur like this just is Tragic; My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and out to the Charlotte Bobcats Organization. As a Bulls Fan also as a NBA lover, I`m pretty sure that everybody is behind the family and organization during this tough time and I just want to Honor his life but also all the other lives on this day in New York City Sept 11,2001.

With Rutgers, Stringer is 284-132 (.683) in 13 seasons. The Scarlet Knights were ranked No. 7 in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll and No. 6 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll last season. Under her tutelage, Rutgers picked up its sixth straight 20-win season in 2008-09 and its 10th overall.
Stringer's performance-driven program has catapulted players such as Shawnetta Stewart, Usha Gilmore, Tammy Sutton-Brown, Tasha Pointer, Davalyn Cunningham, Chelsea Newton, Rebecca Richman, Cappie Pondexter, Matee Ajavon and Essence Carson into the WNBA Draft.
Stringer, 804-267 (.751) overall, took her skills to the international level as an assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic Team in 1980, when the team took home the bronze. In 2004, with a dream team of WNBA superstars, Stringer took home the gold as an assistant coach.
Stringer was one of the key players in the development of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Her mission to preserve the identity of women's basketball was evident in 2007, when a radio shock jock's racist remarks about Rutgers players was met by Stringer with a signature dignity and composure.
Stringer is not only respected by her players but by her peers, who have voted her National Coach of the Year three times. She also was voted 1993 Coach of the Year by Sports Illustrated, USA Today, Converse, the Los Angeles Times and the Black Coaches Association. She was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001 for her integral role as a pioneer in the game.

A.I and Memphis Agree on a deal(Finally,There`s a Answer In Memphis)

Allen Iverson says he's now a member of the Grizzlies.
Iverson made comments on his Twitter page Wednesday morning hinting that a deal is done.
"God Chose Memphis as the place that I will continue my career. I met with Mr. Heinsley, Chris Wallace and my next head coach Lionel Hollins," Iverson tweeted.
A few moments later, he wrote: "I feel that they are committed to developing a winner and I know that I can help them to accomplish that. I feel that I can trust them."
Shortly after Iverson's tweets, a league source confirmed to Yahoo! Sports that he has agreed to a one-year deal with Memphis.

Gordon Has No Hard Feelings Towards Bulls(Interveiw)

Ben Gordon: “I don’t have any bad feelings towards Chicago”
September 7, 2009 @ 8:18 pm by Jorge Sierra · Filed under Ben Gordon, Chicago Bulls, Detroit Pistons, Free Agency
How’s been this summer compared to last year’s when you had to deal with all the uncertainty about your future?
Ben Gordon: It’s obviously been a lot more calm and a lot less stressful – just by having clarity with my situation, having signed early in the summer with the Detroit Pistons. Everything in this summer has been about moving forward, making the transition from the city of Chicago to the city of Detroit. That as opposed to last summer, when it was more stressful. There was a whole lot of uncertainty all the way through training camp. This summer has been less stressful.
Did that stress of the summer carry to the regular season?
BG: When the season started, everything was clear. Clarity was brought into the situation: I knew I was going to play on a one-year deal and that was it. The stress I had is the same every basketball player has: To perform well. It was a little bit more hard because it was a one-year deal and I had to worry about being healthy, performing well and trying to get my team to win as many games as possible. There was a little bit more pressure in that aspect, but other than that… The whole thing about the contract… I mean, clarity was there. I knew exactly what I had to do, so it was a little easier because I had the situation cleared up.
Going into free agency, were you expecting to change teams?
BG: After I signed my one-year deal with the Bulls, that same day I knew that could very well be my last year with the team. Or it could be the the start of something new. Going in, I had an attitude that I was going to expect any and everything – whether it be re-signing or moving to a new team and playing with new teammates. I really didn’t believe one thing was going to happen more than the other.
Tell me a little bit about how the free agency process was. Is it true that the Bulls never made an offer?
BG: Yeah, it’s true. You know, I think the level of interest that the Pistons had and they showed was far greater than that of the Bulls. Most teams in that situation, if they want to re-sign a player like myself in the situation I was under, they’d be very clear about it even before free agency started. But as days got closer, I realized the Bulls weren’t interested in re-signing me. Once July 1 came, the feeling I had was true. They didn’t make an offer. I visited Detroit and that evening I pretty much made my mind up that’s where I wanted to be.
Did it make you feel bad that the Bulls, the team you had led in scoring several years, didn’t show more interest in re-signing you?
BG: Yes and no. After being there for five years, I had a great understanding of how the organization operates. I had a better understanding from the inside, that people on the outside don’t see, of how things work. And at the end of the day, it’s a business. Everybody in that position is going to make the decision that they feel is the best business decision. As a basketball player, obviously with everything I’ve done here and the potential of the future with this team, to not be made an offer is kind of a slap in the face. But from a business standpoint, I fully understand why everything happened the way it did. I don’t have any bad feelings. It’s time to move on and start a new chapter in my career.
When you look back at the Chicago years, how do you feel about what you did there?
BG: I feel that we were like a team that was always on the verge of taking the next step and become one of the elite teams. I feel like we always had great talent, but were always missing one or two pieces to get over the hump. We never got over the hump while I was there, so I’m not happy about that. I wish we’d had more success as a team. We could’ve been great if we had one more piece or at least we had kept the teams together. That part of my career is over. I had a good time there playing basketball. I was able to kind of establish myself in the league and I’m grateful for that. But now I’m going forward and my mentality now is, “How can I, with my teammates, get Detroit to a championship level?” It takes a while. It’s not one year or two years. It takes a while, but that’s my new goal.
There’s not much buzz about the Pistons despite having you and Charlie Villanueva on board now. How do you feel about that?
BG: It’s very clear that the position in which Detroit now is a rebuilding stage. If you look at the team all the way back to 2004, when they won the championship, every year since the team has been competitive. Last season, they took a dip. Joe Dumars realized there were some changes that needed to be made. He kept some of the guys of the team that helped win the championship, but all the while it was time to get some new blood and get ready for another run. It’s only right and natural that we’re under the radar right now cause we’ve got to prove ourselves and establish ourselves. It’s not going to happen in one year, like I said. This is something that we’re trying to build over the next few years.
Do you expect your role to be similar to the one you had in Chicago? Got any idea if you’re going to start or come off the bench?
BG: A lot of that comes from the coach. I learned that early. It’s going to be the coach’s decision at the end of the day. I’ve been on teams where I led the team on scoring, but I was coming off the bench. I’ve been on teams where I started. It’s just whatever makes the team better and the coach feels is more helpful for the team. In Detroit, what I’m expecting is to show my overall game a little bit more. Not just be somebody who can score, but also one who can make plays for his teammates and make them better. That’s something I’m looking forward to.
There are many people who feel that you are just a shooter or just a scorer. Does that bother you?
BG: It doesn’t really matter to me. Everybody’s got a role on the team. There are guys out there whose role is to rebound, others whose role is to score points… That doesn’t mean they can’t do other things, but that’s their role on the team and that’s what the team needs them to do to be successful. What I pride myself on as a player is my preparation. Making sure that I do the right things to be in a position to do what’s necessary for the team. I can definitely do a lot more than what I put on display with the Bulls. I’m looking forward to those new opportunities and at the same time become a better overall player.
As one of the top shooters in the game, who do you think are the Top 5 shooters in the NBA? You can pick yourself.
BG: Pure shooters? I’ve had to say Michael Redd, Ray Allen, Jason Kapono, Stojakovic and Dirk Nowitzki. There’s a bunch of great shooters out there, but those can really shoot the ball.
The European Championship began Monday and Britain is playing. Why did you decide to pass on playing for the team?
BG: I made up my mind and I’m definitely on board to play for Great Britain. But I didn’t want to make a commitment as far as when I was going to play till I felt that I was totally committed to that cause. I want to go there when I’m ready and this summer to me was about getting situated and moving from Chicago to Detroit. I wanted to have everything in order in my life before going overseas and representing the country.
They have been shooting a documentary about your life. How did that come up?
BG: It was one of my good friends that I grew up with. He came up with that idea, that we did a documentary. Especially this past season, it was such a big year for me that you kind of wanted to capture that and show what it’s like for a player going into a contract year and then making the transition to a new team. I think is going pretty good so far.
Do you feel comfortable around the cameras?
BG: I feel more comfortable because I’m doing it with one of my childhood friends. Working with him on this makes the whole thing easier for me. Other than that, I don’t want my life to be put in front of the cameras. But with him, it’s easy.

Nets first NBA team to reach AD deal on Practice Jerseys

The New Jersey Nets are the first NBA team to sell a practice jersey sponsorship, which will put the logo of PNY Technologies on practice uniforms this fall.
The company also bought the naming rights to the Nets' practice facility in East Rutherford, which will be called the PNY Center, as part of a two-year sponsorship agreement.
The Nets' coaching staff will also wear PNY-branded gear during post-practice interviews.

I honestly think that we are going to see more sponsors try to get their company`s Logo on more Practice Jerseys. So we will definetely learn and see will this trend survive or will this be a One-time trial Event.

Grizz and Allen Iverson Back on?? Close to a deal??? Huh

Allen Iverson is getting closer to joining the Grizzlies.
Iverson and Memphis owner Michael Heisley spent Saturday trying to arrange a face-to-face meeting. The development indicates that the guard is close to accepting the team's one-year offer, according to sources.
Iverson has yet to meet with Heisley because Memphis had been dealing solely with the guard's agent, Leon Rose, until now.

Minny and Ramon Sessions agree on a deal for 4yrs 16 million

By Chris Sheridan
ESPN.com
The waiting and wondering is finally over for restricted free agent Ramon Sessions, who agreed Friday to sign a four-year, $16 million offer sheet with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
A source told ESPN.com that the paperwork on the deal was being processed Friday morning. After Sessions signs, the Milwaukee Bucks will have seven days to match the offer, which they are not expected to do
Sessions' name had been linked with the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers throughout the summer. But New York was unwilling to guarantee more than one year -- which would tie up the Knicks' coveted cap space for the summer of 2010 free agent market. And Los Angeles made a trade last month with Minnesota to acquire Sebastian Telfair as the backup to Baron Davis.
In Minneapolis, Sessions would compete for minutes with rookie Jonny Flynn of Syracuse, the sixth pick of the draft who was elevated to No. 1 on the Wolves' point guard depth chart after efforts to acquire Ricky Rubio's rights from the Spanish club DKV Joventut failed earlier this week.
That put the Timberwolves in the position of scrambling to find another playmaker, and the 23-year-old Sessions was the best option on the free agent market after he and his agent, James "Chubby" Wells, decided weeks ago to hold off on committing to the Knicks in the hope a new opportunity would arise.
Unclear, though, is how the addition of Sessions for at least the next three seasons would impact Rubio's status with Minnesota.
The Wolves have been adamant that they will wait two years for Rubio if necessary. But Rubio's decision to stay in his native country when perennial Spanish club power Barcelona offered to pay his entire $5 million buyout with DJK Joventut, coupled with Sessions' looming arrival, only figures to encourage teams interested in Rubio -- such as the Knicks -- to try to pry him away from Minnesota via trade.
Matching the offer to Sessions, whose deal includes a player option for the fourth season, would put the Bucks over the luxury tax threshold, making it extremely unlikely the two-year veteran will return to Milwaukee.
Sessions averaged 12.4 points and 5.7 assists last season for the Bucks.

Wolves and Sessions Close to signing(P.s. check out my other articles down at the bottom too)

After a long wait, restricted free-agent Ramon Sessions is reportedly on the verge of signing an offer sheet. Surprisingly, the team closing in on Sessions appears to be the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Wolves have about $3.7 million of their mid-level exception available for this 2009-2010 season. Any offer sheet would need to be at least two seasons in length.
The Bucks would have seven days to match but it is believed that they are highly unlikely to do so since the team is only $1.6 million under the luxury tax threshold.
Wolves' GM David Kahn would add another point guard to his roster after Ricky Rubio's decision to spend two more years overseas.
The Knicks and Clippers were thought to be in pursuit of Sessions most of the off-season.

Bruce Bowen retires after 12 years(at age 38)

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- Bruce Bowen won't be pestering the NBA's best anymore

The 38-year-old former San Antonio Spurs forward retired Thursday after 12 seasons and a reputation as one of the league's most menacing defenders, hounding opponents with a tenacity that some players groused was more dirty than dogged.
He called it quits after being waived this summer by Milwaukee, where the Spurs dealt him in a veteran dump-off for swingman Richard Jefferson -- a decision Bowen said he understood.
"You need to do things to better the business, and the Spurs definitely got better in the players they received, so I'm looking forward to continuously supporting the Spurs, but from more of a distance now," he said in a news conference at his wife's San Antonio salon.
Bowen said he had been weighing retirement for the last five years.
Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili get most of the glory for bringing three NBA championships to San Antonio this decade. But Bowen gladly did the dirty work, relishing his role as the pesky, lockdown defender who covered the other team's best player.
Asked about the likely reaction to his retirement from stars like the Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant and the Phoenix Suns' Steve Nash, Bowen chuckled, "I'm sure a lot of people are happy."
Bowen was named eight times to the NBA's all-defensive team. He finished runner-up three times in defensive player of the year voting. And though he never averaged more than 8.2 points a season, Bowen didn't shy from taking a clutch 3-pointer.
He started alongside the Big Three during the championship runs in 2003, 2005 and 2007. Bowen went on to start 500 straight games before kicking New Orleans' Chris Paul in March 2008 and drawing a one-game suspension -- justice in the eyes of Bowen's critics.
Opposing fans vilified Bowen as a master of cheap shots and sneaky shoves. Amare Stoudemire once insisted Bowen purposely kicked him in the playoffs. Dirk Nowitzki said after a physical April playoff game that it was the Spurs who had a dirty player, not Dallas.
Nowitzki didn't mention Bowen by name. He didn't have to.
Bowen acknowledged Thursday only one play in which he purposely kicked another player: Ray Allen in a March 2006 game against the Seattle SuperSonics, a scuffle that earned him a $10,000 fine.
"That play, I remember and I regret because of me intentionally doing that," Bowen said.
But he said that his reputation as a sometimes dirty player is unfair.
"People are entitled to their own opinions. I've been fighting that for quite some time," said Bowen, who added he drew a lot of calls because of bad timing. "It just so happened that I was there after everyone stuck their hands in the cookie jar and then the lights came on and I had a cookie."
Bowen was not the most obvious starter for a championship team early in his career. Drafted by Miami from Cal State Fullerton, he spent several seasons bouncing between clubs and earning little playing time.
But after his 2001 arrival in San Antonio, he found his place, eventually earning defensive player accolades and a regular starting job.
He said he hopes that will be his legacy.
"It's not how you start but how you finish," Bowen said. "I hope my legacy would be as someone that never was satisfied with just being where they were."

Potential FA of 2010 Chris Bosh NEWS

While preparing to travel to South Africa to participate in the NBA's Basketball Without Borders program, Chris Bosh spoke of his closeness to Toronto.
“It’s kind of crazy, I’ve never spent this much time in the summer here, it’s great,” he said. “I definitely feel closer to Toronto, I know that for sure.”
Bosh sounds enthusiastic about the coming season with new teammates Hedo Turkoglu, Jarrett Jack, DeMar DeRozan, Marco Belinelli and others.
“I think we’re looking like a good team, and the part I like is I’m not getting too far ahead of myself,” he said. “I learned that last year. I was like, ‘Yeah, we’re good and we’re going to be good’ and we weren’t. I’m taking a more humble approach this year, and it’s making me work harder.
“I don’t want to do bad this year. I want this team do well and be successful as we can be – that’s enough motivation for me right now.”
Earlier this offseason, Bosh indicated that he wasn't interested in discussing an extension, but he his interest is at least slightly piqued.
“We haven’t read the book yet, but when he has it ready, I’ll gladly sit down and talk about it, discuss pros and cons, and come to a decision,” Bosh said. “But I like that we’re not sitting around, waiting around, putting all our eggs in the basket and saying we’re going to wait for 2010 because we want to have [salary] cap space to get players you might not be able to sign. The do-it-now approach is very motivating, for everyone.
“We’re a lot deeper and I think we have a fantastic team. If we work on the small things, we can make some noise.”
